Below is my second submission to the SDSVP electronic newsletter. I am asking for input on goals for the organization. My hope is to get input from a wide cross section of Partners. My fear is that I will not get any input. I will be diligent in requesting input from the Partners and assume that slowly the Partners will realize that I am serious about their views.

I was thinking about the types of people I want on my staff and my cabinet. I need people of great passion and intelligence. I need a diverse group of backgrounds and philosophy. Most importantly, I need people who adhere to my Core Values.

In the early morning hours of May 25, four young men barely out of high school beat to death a neighbor of mine named Emery Kananui, age 24. Emery lived with his mom just around the corner from my home. I did not know Emery or the four young men accused in the killing. I do know that five young men have been lost to a single senseless act of violence.

For the past 20 years or so, I have wanted to be President of the United States. So today, I am starting my campaign. Over the next 4 years, I will be posting my Core Values, my Mission for my terms (4 years is not enough, so I will need 8 years), and my views on issues past, present and future. In a sense, this is what some call a “platform”. What is great about the Internet and this Blog is that we will be able to track how my platform will develop. How it will change and how it will not change.

Why did I join Vistage back in 1991? That is an easy question to answer.
I was a software engineer since companies paid me to program their computers. I was a CEO because I filed some documents with the State of California. Being a CEO by title, but not knowing how to be a CEO is a pretty stupid thing to do. Then again, I think it is important that CEOs are willing to try things when they don’t fully understand the facts.

This is a brief article I submitted for the SDSVP newsletter. I am a huge believer in endowments. I think that if a non-profit can build an endowment to cover the overhead necessary to run the organization, it allows for 2 very important things. First is that all money received from new donors can be allocated directly to the programs that the non-profit supports. Second, it takes a huge fundraising burden off of the non-profit staff. This is not to say that the non-profit should ignore fundraising, it just makes the staff a bit less stressed. Anyways, here is what I submitted to the SDSVP newsletter. Please feel free to send in your endowment donations!

November 9, 2002 - I was incredibly blessed in everything revolving around doing the Florida Ironman in Panama City Beach. One of the most unusual blessings was the 3 massage therapists who stayed at the ocean front condo we stayed at for the week of the race. I trained with two friends, Anthony and Steph. Anthony is a massage therapist. His wife Melissa and a friend Aaron are also both massage therapists and they both came out for the race. I had a pre-race massage the night before. I had a post race massage about 2 hours after the race. I had a third massage the day after the race. Incredibly, my body feels pretty good after a 13:08:41 race. I wonder why they call it a race? For me, it was an event, not a race. The fast folks raced. The pros raced. I just tried to finish.
